ARGENTINA – REGULAR TOURS

CATARATAS DEL IGUAZU – IGUAZU FALLS

A memorable experience and a spectacle of nature that are considered one of the wonders of the world. These falls originated 200 thousands years ago in the place that today is known as “the 3 frontiers” marked with stone pillars, where the Iguazú river and the Paraná river meet.

A geological fault produced in the Paraná riverbed made the outlet of the Iguazú river become an abrupt cascade approximately 80 meters high.

From that point, where the falls originate to where the Devil’s Throat is located today, covers 23 kilometers. This is due to the slow process of erosion, however the steep drop which defines them as waterfalls remains.

This original cascade, has become the most impressive fall of the group, the Devil’s Throat.  Eighty meters high, it is located on the principal river course. Depending on the water level, you can see anywhere between 160 to 260 falls, that on average flow at a rate of 1500 cubic meters of water per second.

The violence of the falls produce a permanent fog, where sunbeams form multiple rainbows of incredible beauty.

SALTA

The northwest of Argentina is a territory with the most abrupt changes of climate and landscape in the country. Hispanic culture has left a strong mark here, and one can see adobe homes and modest churches in nearly every community, and the remains of pre-Hispanic culture are everywhere. Variegated barren hills rise all around, large cacti dot the landscape, and the deep blue of the sky is only occasionally interrupted by clouds. There are a number of places in the region that don't fit into this category at all, and the scenery ranges from jungle gardens to icy Andean peaks, from moon landscape to deciduous forest, and from adobe villages to streams and rivers of clear water; but wherever you go in the northwest, there's always something interesting to do or see, and certainly, friendly people and plenty of sun.

(1*) Salta gets her name from the Aymara word "sagta", meaning ¨very beautiful¨, and is known today as "la linda" (the beautiful one). Situated in a very fertile valley, that still bears the founder's name "Lerma", is, of all the provincial capitals, the city that has best preserved its patrimony of colonial architecture.

This is  one of the oldest cities founded in the country by the Spaniards. The main point of interest will be the Cabildo (Town Hall), the Archbishop´s Palace and Cathedral all around the main square (9 de Julio), San Francisco´s church and San Bernardo´s church and convent. A visit to the crafts market, actually an old mansion transformed into a museum and gift exhibition centre, offers an excellent chance to observe authentic samples of the native artcrafts and the opportunity to buy them at very reasonable prices

(2*) Cafayate is situated 183 km away from the capital city and  has become the most important site in the Calchaquí Valleys. Located at 1,660 m above sea level.

Cafayate it´s the home to the only true native varietal Argentine wine - the Torrontes - of fruity and sweet flavor. Visit to the wineries with opportunities of wine tasting. The drive to Cafayate passes by some impressive geological formations produced by erosion on the colourful sedimentation of sandstone over the past 60 million years and getting to know its streets, its houses and mainly its people is a pleasant experience due to the fact that tourism is an important activity for the town. One cannot miss to observe the unique architecture of the Cathedral, the flowery main square, the picturesque stone mill or the wine museums.

(3*) Full-day excursion to Quebrada de Humahuaca and pre-Hispanic towns. We'll leave Salta in the direction of San Salvador de Jujuy, we will go to the most picturesque part of the Valley, up to Humahuaca, passing by Tumbaya, Purmamarca (with the Mountain of Seven Colors), Maimará, (with the Painter's palette), Tilcara (that attracts for its famous Pucara, not precisely a fortress but an Omoguacan village probably built in the 10th century, on top of a mountain), Huacalera (a few steps away from the Tropic of Capricorn), Uquía (with the chapel built in 1691 and the most ancient wooden altarpiece in the region, and the paintings of the “Arcabuceros Angels”) and finally, charming Humahuaca; the village known for it's ¨Carnaval Norteño¨ (Northern Carnival).

(1*) The Valdés Peninsula is one of the most important wildlife reserves in Argentina, jutting out into the sea and joining the firm earth through the Carlos Ameghino isthmus. The peninsula’s landscape is arid and in the desert the outstanding feature are the low-lying Salinas Grandes (salt lakes) below sea level. Several guanacos, theas and maras can be seen loping along the road, and there also are many sheep farms on the island. The Peninsula’s main attraction is to be found on its coasts -mainly cliffs- and surrounding waters. There is an elephants seal colony at Punta Delgada (½ September to ½ April). The Golfo Nuevo is the breeding ground for Southern Right whales (½ July to ½ December). About 1 ½ hs navigation departing from Puerto Pirámides, a small tourist resort, which allows passengers to approach the whales until almost touching them, and move among them while they whistle and play; an unforgettable experience). On the Isla de los Pájaros (an islet in the Gulf San José) there is a marine bird reserve, where there are Kelp gulls and cormorants.

(2*) Leaving from Puerto Madryn to the south  we will reach Punta Tombo, the Magellan penguins provincial reserve where visitors are awed from September to April with the vision of hundreds of thousands of penguins running after their breeding or looking for their nests. Its aim was to protect one of the most diverse sea birds colonies in Argentina, and the biggest Magellan Penguin colony on the continent, with almost half a million individuals.  With a landscape typical of the Patagonian steppe, arid and desolate, you will be surprised by the activity of animals as you get closer to Punta Tombo. Punta Tombo is also a paradise for other sea birds that nest there. Gray or Austral Seagulls, Skuas, two species of Cormorants, Steam Ducks, and two species of Oyster Catchers, Antarctic Doves, Giant Petrels, and others. Islote Chato, situated on the north of Punta Tombo, is a resting and gathering place for hundreds of Sea Wolves. In the neighboring waters you will see Whales, Dolphins and Orcas. Once in the steppe you will notice the presence of American Ostriches, Gray Foxes, Armadillos, Maras, and herds of Guanacos, Skunks and Ferrets. Punta Tombo is a key point for many species, as indicated by the diversity and abundance of both land and sea wild fauna that you can see and admire there.

In this tour you will visit Gaiman city The name Gaiman is a Tehuelche term meaning "sharpening stone". This village conserves the habits, the language, the architecture and the tradition of the first Welsh colonists, a peaceful simple place full of history. After traveling through the picturesque streets of Gaiman, you should not miss the singularly flavored "Welsh Tea", prepared according to the old traditions, and accompanied with Welsh Cake and different home-made cakes and bread. The famous Welsh Cake was introduced in Patagonia by Welsh immigrants who arrived in 1850 to the lower valley of the Chubut river. There are several variants for this recipe, but the basic one includes black sugar, nuts and currants.
