IRPA 12 BUSINESS PROGRAMME SECTION
IRPA informs you that the IRPA 12 Business Programme Section is now open to all visitors at the IRPA Web Site (www.irpa.net)
ICNIRP workshop
We ought to inform that the International
Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
(ICNIRP) has decided to continue to hold
its workshop separately from the IRPA Congress.
Notwithstanding, IRPA12 will continue to
offer the planned technical sessions on
non-ionizing radiation protection where
individual contributions will be presented,
the various topics discussed and conclusions
reached. In addition, the customary ICNIRP
report will be presented at IRPA 12 Congress.
Training Programme
The Training Programme will provide Congress
participants with an opportunity to update
their knowledge in specific areas of radiation
protection. Accreditation of the Training
Programme is being negotiated with the American
Academy of Health Physics.
Instructors of outstanding expertise will
deliver twenty refresher courses. These
courses are offered in five parallel sessions
each morning, Tuesday through Friday, beginning
at 08:00 a.m.
Quality texts are being prepared and will
be available on the IRPA website after the
Congress. The careful preparation and review
of material presented will ensure that these
texts constitute a basic reference material
of value for some years beyond IRPA12.
Additionally to Refresher Courses, three
five-hours Seminars will be delivered in
parallel, on Wednesday 20th October, from
02:00 to 07:00 p.m. Different topics on
a given theme will be addressed by a team
of specialists selected for their knowledge,
expertise and communication skills.
 News
Worldwide Governmental Support for IRPA12!
IRPA12
has received unexpected support from Governments
around the world. On September 22, 2006,
the 142 States participating in the General
Conference of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) approved Resolution GC(50)/RES/10
which includes a request for supporting
IRPA12.
Resolution GC(50)/RES/10
(in its operative paragraph 35), after noting
‘the forthcoming XIIth Congress of
the International Radiation Protection Association,“Strengthening
Radiation Protection Worldwide” (IRPA
12), which will take place in Buenos Aires
in October 2008’, in fact ‘encourages
the [IAEA] Secretariat to support the dissemination
of information arising from this event and
to support the participation of developing
countries…’

It is the first time
in the history of IRPA Congresses that Governments
have taken such an unprecedented step. It
may indicate a renewed political interest
in radiation protection and safety. Notably,
the decision was made in the highest body
of the IAEA, which is recognised to be the
‘nuclear watchdog’ within the
United Nations system. The IAEA was awarded
the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts
(inter alia) ‘to ensure that nuclear
energy for peaceful purposes is used in
the safest possible way’.
This Governmental decision
is good news for the radiation protection
profession around the world, particularly
for scientists from developing countries.
It will now be easier for them to obtain
support for attending IRPA12. It will also
facilitate achieving the main IRPA12 goal:
